THAT'S RIGHT MOTHERF&@*^#%!!! WEEK ONE IS DOWN!
Thanks to the motivation by viewers like you, I have finished my first week of this fitness challenge. What have I noticed? A general rise in my badassery of course! I feel stronger, look better and am honestly in a much better mood since the start one week ago.
Thanks to the push from Trey70 on Bodybuilding.com, I've made a bigger effort to increase the difficulty each day. What does that mean? More reps of course. Here's how Day 7 went down:
First off, I was in a pretty sh*!!$ mood all day up until I started my training. The day was just not going the way I wanted it to. Everyone in my shop was gone; most of them being at sexual assault training... training on what sexual assault is and how to stop it.
I ended up going to Sports Med pretty hungry and this kind of put me in a bad mood too. My trainer made sugar cookie bars which was actually pretty good so that helped a bit. I guess I never really explained what I do at Sports Med and why I'm there.
In April of 2009 I injured my back lifting something during a field op. I couldn't walk correctly, felt like a pinched nerve. I was at a stiff correct posture for weeks. I actually ended up having to do a Physical Fitness Test (PFT) in the Marine Corps while I was still injured so I could go on the deployment. 100 crunches, 19 pullups and a 20 something run time later and I was basically in tears.
I never really sought treatment for it and every month or two I could keep re-aggravating it and would spend a week not being able to walk or do anything correctly. That's one of the reasons why I couldn't really lift for a long period of time, because my back would just die.
After a few years, I finally tried to get help around May/June of this year (2012). I was sent to Sports Med and they said they think it is a muscle imbalance throwing off my balance and adding to my stress. I don't know how true that is, I feel like it is more than that, but they put me on a regimen of strengthening exercises and stretches. Ever since then, I haven't really had many problems with it. Maybe for a day or three it will get bad, but for the most part it's not getting worse. It still hurts/feels numb/uncomfortable when I'm sitting or bending back, but not worse.
What a usual day at Sports Med ends up being is this:
I start with an aerobic exercise. Lately I've been doing the "walk to run" program to help me start running again. I'm at level 1 so I run for a minute, walk for 4, and so on until 30-35 minutes has passed. Then I'll go into stretches for my back, shoulders, legs, and throw in some exercises as well. It's pretty good and definitely has helped.
After Sports Med I changed over to go pick up my med refill/do blood tests across base at the Naval Hospital. I hate driving and wasting gas, and I hate going to the Naval Hospital when the Galley (chow hall) is closed. It just seems like a waste.
I got the blood drawn, 5 tubes of my sweet, delectable blood, and headed over to the pharmacy. After waiting forever, it was finally my turn. The lady handed me my Zyprexa (which I didn't need more of) and said she couldn't give me the Remeron (which I'm almost out of), the whole reason I went there, because my doctor put in the refill for 15 mg, not 45 like I've been taking, and it's too soon since my last pick up for me to get more.
WTF?!?!?!?!!1 Unfortunately this was a minor oversight on his part which is understandable, he has tons of patients every day and it's hard to keep track of who's taking what at which dose, but I was absolutely irate. I think she could tell from my face because she hurriedly tried to get me the heck out of there.
All of this on top of trouble with the DMV/Bank. I payed my car off a few months ago and have eagerly been waiting for the title to come in. No dice. My bank says they released it, Pennsylvania says they haven't, and it's a game of badminton with me bouncing back between the two being told the other person is in the wrong. Yeah F'n Right.
All of these things compounded on top of each other just put me through the roof. I needed to do something to get my mind off the BS. But what would that be? You guessed it; slaying my immortal body until I couldn't feel a thing.
I got some food from the chow hall and I headed back to the barracks to prepare. I ended up going outside to the pullup bars around 1735 and just started knocking them out. I was originally doing supersets of them with jump squats. That absolutely slayed me. Jump squats just kill my body. I'm out of shape and depriving myself of much needed oxygen while doing them; it's perfect. I loved every single second of being on the verge of puking and not wanting to continue but doing it anyways.
After I got my 77 jump squats, I continued to superset with bicycle crunches. This proved pretty good since my abs were getting a solid workout while my back was still trucking along.
Once I finished all the pullups and bikes I could do, I headed inside for some elevated pushups followed by bench dips. This always gets my triceps in a complete state of exhaustion. Whoever thinks you can't build muscles with bodyweight exercises isn't doing it right. That's just my personal opinion though. I started getting a good pump about halfway through and completely finished about an hour after I started.
I drank some protein to fuel my mini muskles and took a much deserved shower. I had to pick up a canteen pouch so I could finally check out of CIF, so I headed out to town. I was feeling pretty hungry and somehow ended up at Barnes & Noble, as usual, so I decided to give Red Robin a try.
I never really liked them to be honest, but I was in the mood for a burger.
Instant surprise, UNLIMITED FREE REFILLS ON FRIES AND ROOT BEER FLOATS! My new favorite place. I ate big (Burger, fries and float) and went home to post Day 6 of my fitness challenge, and finish my calf raises.
All in all it ended up being a good day. I will definitely try to slay my body like I did today more often. First week down, 2 more to go.
Thanks for checking out Day 7, the wrapup of my first week of my fitness challenge. You can check out the rest of my challenge and take a look at my segment on Barracks Living to better help yourself. I'm also on the facebook and twitter.
